Commissioner Doherty was raised, educated, and employed in Port Angeles. After service in the U.S. Navy, he attended Peninsula College, Gonzaga University, and Georgetown University. He earned a baccalaureate degree in political science, a master's degree in juvenile counseling, and a juris doctor degree. He was an adjunct faculty member at Peninsula College for over twenty years, teaching Business Law and American Government, while also doing contract legal research.
As the initial chairman of the Clallam County Board of Freeholders, Mike helped design a process that eventually resulted in the drafting and passage of the Clallam County Home Rule Charter. Subsequently serving as a county commissioner from 1976-1980, Mike participated in the implementation of the Clallam County's new charter government. Other public service has included election to the Port Angeles School Board (1991-1998), which he chaired from 1996-1998. Re-elected as a commissioner in 1998, 2002, and 2006 he represents the third or westernmost district of the county.
Mike has served on numerous state and local advisory boards and committees. He has testified before committees of both houses of the Washington State Legislature and the U.S. Congress, state and federal agencies and the National Energy Board of Canada.
Mike is married to Dr. Paula Doherty, Vice-President of Institutional Effectiveness at Peninsula College. They have three adult sons, Eoin, Conn and Killian.
